Markets can't run up every day forever. Eight of Nine days in a row turned out to be enough and the bears at least got to have one small winning day. We had no real economic news today and profit taking and concerns about Greece took more of the stage than an ongoing bull market which was getting long in the tooth.
Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow 10,741.98 -37.19 (-0.35%)

How many days in a row can stocks rise? Now we are seeing the panic buying or a melt-up, as some in the media are calling it. A stronger Philly Fed index helped, as did CPI and weekly jobless claims. Today was either 8 or 9 days up for the
DJIA. Rumors of Greece needing to go the IMF and even a rumor that the Fed might lift the discount rate again did not even kill the market.

Overseas markets were up on St. Patrick's cheers, or up on continued FOMC promises of keeping rates low. Then a lower producer price index sealed in the day. We are basically back to where the markets are just not wanting to trade off.
Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow 10,733.67 +47.69 (0.45%)
S&P 500 1,166.19 +6.73 (0.58%)

The FOMC not only kept rates at near-zero, the FOMC promised again that an "extended period" was left in the statement with a 9-1 vote to leave rates unchanged. Today was one of those days where overseas markets were up on Greece debt hopes, and the negative
DJIA in the morning reversed itself for gains most of the day.

Today was a negative trading session almost the entire day. But then a last hour recovery took stocks above the flat line despite what felt like a very mixed ticker tape. The FOMC meeting is tomorrow and we just saw a homebuilder sentiment index drop today. Senator Dodd's financial regulation package was also deemed to be not quite as damning as some had feared.

Today was mixed on the economic front. Retail sales were actually positive rather than the expected drop of -0.2%. But then University of Michigan's Sentiment reading came out at 72.5, a reading about 2 points short of estimates. The January Business Inventories being flat in January had no real impact. The gap up this morning on the back of international markets came off and shares struggled between positive and negative territory all day. Yet one more day where the closing bell's direction was not known until the final minutes. Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow 10,624.69 +12.85 (0.12%)
S&P 500 1,149.99 -0.25 (-0.02%)

A final hour of a rally put the market back in positive territory. But overall this was yet another day where the real close was not clear until the final minutes. The trade deficit was a non-event and the weekly jobless claims were a very slight improvement by 6,000 to 462,000 for the week. Even Senator Dodd going alone on a financial reform bill didn't hurt the markets.
Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Today's market was described as another wishy-washy day where no directional feel was present because of fluctuations from positive to negative. The closing bell being positive or negative was something that was not certain until the end of the trading day. Unemployment rose in 30 states, but this was a January figure. The notion that February's deficit was a record hardly had any significant dent.
The unofficial closing bell levels were as follows:
Dow 10,565.67 +1.29 (0.01%)
S&P 500 1,145.57 +5.13 (0.45%)

Today was the one-year anniversary of the stock market's peak selling day. The DJIA is up about 61% from the March 9, 2009 close. Despite many stocks being higher and transports being higher, today was one of those days where the gains were almost taken away entirely toward the end of the day, and whether market would end the day up or down was not really guessable until right before the 4PM close.
Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow 10,564.53 +12.01 (0.11%)

Today felt like a road to nowhere all day. The DJIA went into negative territory six times or more today after trying to hold gains in the early hours. And there was no solid economic news to run the markets one way or another. News out of the National Association for Business Economics
calling for a rate hike and a deficit watch had no real impact.

Today's unemployment data coming in flat at 9.7%, and a lower than expected loss in non-Farm payrolls data, led the markets to treat the data as though there was really an add in jobs outside of weather. Stocks opened strong and stayed that way all day. If you can believe it, late day data from the Fed showed that Americans actually
increased consumer credit in January. That is the first credit gain in a year, even if it is not universal.

Today started out strong on news of the Greek austerity plans, but the markets managed to give back most of the gains. The jobs data this morning was anemic, but offered some hope, and the ISM services data was promising. Even the Beige Book looked more positive than before with low inflation worries. Yet traders sold the market after President Obama talked health care reform again. Today was a mini-bull that got away.

Today was probably more about international market news more than the domestic news. Outside of February auto sales, we had very little economic data to absorb. The markets spent most of the day much higher, but profit taking and positions being lightened up seemed to take out the steam and the actual closing bell levels. A red or black day was not clear until the last few minutes. Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Today was one of those days that started out strong and just stayed strong. Spending in January rose 0.5% but outpaced a 0.1% gain in personal income. Stocks started out strong in the early indication this morning but then went limp after economic data showed that perhaps housing isn't quite as robust as many were hoping and as University of Michigan's consumer sentiment was lower than expected.
